August 11, 2026
The storm dropped a large tree onto a home in the unincorporated Lockport Heights neighborhood. The homeowner told the Herald-News the tree had been trimmed back days earlier (Herald-News). Lockport City Hall lost power and phones, so the City asked residents to report trees blocking roads to the police non-emergency line, 815-838-2131 (same source).
City vs. unincorporated
Lockport Heights is outside city limits, so parkway questions there don't go to the City. Inside Lockport, the City reimburses 50% of an approved parkway tree, up to $175, once a year per resident, after a Parkway Tree Permit is approved. It also runs a free Fall Parkway Tree Program; the 2026 round is closed and 2027 requests go to Public Works at 815-838-0549, option 8 (City of Lockport).
Trimming is not a guarantee
The Lockport Heights story shows trimming doesn't make a big tree storm-proof. If a large tree leans toward the house or has decay at the base, ask an arborist whether removal or cabling makes more sense.
